The figures here are published in good faith from open government data. They describe places rather than people, and they are not a basis for a decision about anyone.

Three things this site is not. It is not advice of any kind, legal, financial, property or personal safety. It is not a safety rating, and a low figure is not an assurance about a street, an area or a property. And it says nothing about any individual: the data holds no information about offenders, suspects or victims, so it must never be used to make a decision about a person.
What this site is
A statistical reference. It republishes recorded crime released by police forces and other public bodies, recalculated into rates and comparisons, with the method set out in full on how the figures work. It is published by Search Ventures Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 10588553. "We" and "us" mean that company. Using the site means accepting these terms.
Accuracy, and its limits
We take care over the figures and publish the known gaps rather than hiding them. The site is still provided as it stands, and we do not warrant that it is accurate, complete or current. These are the reasons why, and they are inherent to the data rather than excuses.

| Recorded, not committed | Counts what the police wrote down. Crime never reported never appears, and a change in recording practice moves the number with no change in crime. |
| Approximate locations | Offences are snapped to the nearest point on a fixed list of anonymised map points, so a crime shown on one street may have happened on another. |
| Gaps and revisions | Forces file late, partially, or not at all, and the Home Office revises earlier data. A figure read today may legitimately differ tomorrow. |
| Residents as the denominator | Rates divide by resident population, so places with many visitors and few residents read high for reasons unconnected to risk to a resident. |
If you rely on anything here you do so on your own judgement. Where a figure matters, check it against the original, all of which are listed and linked on data sources.
Using the site
You may read, quote and link to anything here. You must not:
- use the site or its data to identify, profile, target or harass any person;
- present the figures misleadingly, in particular by stripping the caveats that go with them or describing recorded crime as a measure of danger to an individual;
- place an automated load heavy enough to degrade the site for others, or work around rate limits and bot checks;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to the site, its server or its database, or introduce anything malicious;
- republish the site substantially as your own, or in a way implying we endorse you.
We may withdraw access to anyone doing these things, and report unlawful conduct to the relevant authority.
What you send us
If you send a message or submit a safety rating, you confirm it is yours to send, is not unlawful or defamatory, and does not identify a third party. You allow us to use it to run and improve the site, including publishing ratings in aggregate, which is the only form they ever appear in. We may remove any contribution. How we handle it is in the privacy notice.
Reusing the figures
The underlying statistics come from public bodies under the Open Government Licence v3.0. That licence, not these terms, governs your reuse of the source data, and it requires attribution to the originating body. Where you quote a figure, cite the publisher named on data sources rather than this site: they produced it and we counted it.
The wording, analysis, design and code of this site are ours. Quote reasonable extracts with a link, and link to any page without asking. Wholesale copying of the written material is not permitted.
Our liability
What we never exclude. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited: death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and anything else the law does not permit us to exclude. If you are a consumer, none of this affects your statutory rights.
Subject to that, and so far as the law allows: we exclude the conditions, warranties and representations that would otherwise be implied; we are not liable for loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or anything in it; and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill or anticipated savings, or for loss arising from a decision taken on the basis of a figure published here.
We are not responsible for the content of external sites we link to, including the government sources the data comes from, which we do not control.
The site is free and offered without any guarantee of availability. We may change, suspend, restrict or withdraw any part of it, including any page, figure or feature, at any time and without notice.
Law, and changes
These terms and any dispute arising from them are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction. A consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom may also bring proceedings in their own jurisdiction. If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and the version in force is the one published here when you use the site.
