The OpenCrime community

Local views

The police record what is reported to them. They cannot say whether a street feels safe after dark, whether anyone ever sees a patrol, or whether the thing people actually live with is speeding or fly-tipping. The people who live there can, and this is where they say it.

Add your view of where you live

Find your area, then use the Share your view box near the top of its page. It takes about a minute, it is anonymous, and you can skip any question.

Latest from people who know their area

Nobody has had a note published yet. Notes are the optional last step of the questions on every place page, and each one is read before it appears.

Places people have been describing

Most recent first. The figure is how many people have answered for that place itself; a county's page also counts everyone who answered for somewhere inside it.

How local views work

  • Every figure says how many people it comes from. One answer is shown as one person's answer, never as a percentage, so a single opinion cannot brand a neighbourhood. Percentages start at 5 answers.
  • One answer per person, per place, per question. Answering again changes your answer rather than adding a second one. Answers count for two years.
  • Never mixed into the crime figures. How a place feels and what it records are shown side by side, labelled, and where they disagree the page says so.
  • Notes are read before they appear. Anything that names or points at a person, a household or an address, accuses anyone, or advertises is not published.
  • Anonymous. No account and no email address. Your connection address is stored only as a one-way scrambled code, used to stop one person answering a thousand times, and a bot check runs once when you start. The privacy notice has the detail.
