Privacy

You can read every page here without giving us anything and without accepting anything. No accounts, nothing sold. The site carries Google advertising, which sets cookies of its own. This is what we collect and how to make us delete it.

The short version. Reading the site collects nothing that identifies you. Visitor numbers are counted without cookies. Google Analytics runs only if you said yes, and you can change that from the footer of any page. Use the contact form and we keep your message and address so a person can reply. Rate an area and we keep the score and a one-way hash that stops double voting, and nothing else.

What we collect, and why

Everything this site holds about a visitor, what it is for, the lawful basis under UK GDPR, and how long it stays.

We never use the address you give on the contact form for anything except replying. There is no mailing list, because there is nothing to send.

Cookies

Two of these need your permission. The rest either record a choice you made or make a feature work at all.

Ahrefs Web Analytics is absent from this table because it sets nothing at all. Change your analytics choice.

Who else sees anything

We do not sell data. Four suppliers see something because of how the web works: Cloudflare, which serves and protects the site; Ahrefs, for cookieless counts; Google, for analytics where you accepted it and for the advertising on every page; and OpenStreetMap, whose servers see a request from your browser when a map draws its tiles. Where they act for us they do so under contract.

Some operate outside the United Kingdom, and data reaching them is transferred under the safeguards in their agreements, such as the UK addendum to the standard contractual clauses. We disclose information if the law requires it, and not otherwise.

The crime statistics themselves are not personal data and do not describe you. They arrive from government sources as counts and locations, never as records about identified people, and the police snap street-level crime to anonymised map points rather than addresses. How the figures work sets that out.

Your rights

Where we hold personal data about you, which in practice means a message you sent us, you can ask for a copy, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to or restrict what we do with it, and ask for it in a portable form. Where we rely on consent you can withdraw it at any time without giving a reason.

Email us and we will answer within one month, at no charge. We may need to check a request is genuinely yours, which for a message normally means replying from the address that sent it.

If you think we have handled your data badly, tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, which regulates data protection in the United Kingdom.

OpenCrime is published by Search Ventures Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 10588553, which is the data controller under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. The registered office is on the public Companies House record linked above.

This site has no accounts, no profiles and nothing directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If this notice changes we update the date at the top. Where a change materially affects what we do with personal data we will say so on the site rather than change the page quietly.
